The butterfly chair, also known as BKF to credit its three designers (Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy) was created in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1938. Before that, the 3 young Architects worked for the famous Swiss Le Corbusier’s Studio in Paris, France. After this experience, they set up their own studio in Buenos Aires (Grupo Austral) and created the BKF chair. (Among many other successfully urban and architectural projects.) In early 1940s the director of MoMA's Industrial Design Department, Edgar Kaufmann Jr. saw this design and ordered 2 chairs, one for his own house and other one for the museum. The chair is still on exhibition in MoMA Museum in New York. Kaufmann anticipated correctly that this chair was going to be a total success in USA. Artek-Pascoe Inc produced the chair from 1941 to 1948, and then Knoll Associates acquired U.S. production rights in the late 1940s until 1951.
After being fans, users, and producers of the butterfly chair for many years, we noticed that it was not so comfortable. For that reason, we gave the challenge to a group of talented Industrial Designers with the instructions of keeping the original design spirit and make it much more comfortable.
Thanks to computer simulations and then testing many prototypes, the team arrived at this new design of the butterfly chair.
We named it the Butterfly 2020 chair. Our new and exclusive design has more leg space, head relaxed positions and ergonomic back sitting angles which make it great for watching TV, checking your phone, reading a book, or just talking with your loved ones.
Dimensions of our butterfly chair are: 40 in (102 cm) height, 33 in (84 cm) width, and 32 in (81 cm) depth.
It requires assembling. The chair will be shipped complete (frame and cover) with all the necessary things to have it ready to use. We will send you detailed and easy assembling instructions. Following our step by step guide you can easily assemble it by yourself. Of anyways, another option is that you hire a furniture assembling service to help you with this, if you decide to hire someone we can recommend you some online platforms to do it.
We are going to send you photos of your actual butterfly chair cover before we ship your order without any additional cost. Once you approve it we will ship the order to you. So, you can be totally sure that you will like the unique style of it.
Variations in colors may occur as covers are made from natural style cowhides and they are still a natural product. There are not two cowhides exactly the same; each cowhide is unique. The pictures shown here at the product’s page are reference photos. (With the photo proofing service once you order, you will receive photos of the actual item as explained above.)

Our cowhides are highly resistant and durable. They are very easy to clean and maintain.
Here are some advices:
- Vacuum or brush the cowhide regularly to remove dust and dry small particles of dirt.
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure.
- Please place your cowhide rug on a completely dry floor. After cleaning the floor sometimes some humidity remains, and placing your rug on top of this would make it absorb moisture. So always place your rug on a completely dry floor.
- Rotating your rug from time to time is recommended.
- Please be sure not to get the cowhide wet or damp.
- Do not soak the cowhide or put into the washing machine.
- For minor spills immediately absorb the liquid with a paper towel or sponge, then wipe smoothly in the direction of the hair with a damp (but not too wet) sponge or cloth using a mild, soapy solution.
- For mayor cleaning, you can steam clean your cowhide as long as you do not soak the leather backing.
All hides used in the production of our leather goods come from animal farming for food consumption. These hides are professionally and ethically tanned. We feel very satisfied about selecting what is left over from the food industry. Leather is a 100% natural product, which comes from nature and will one day return to nature.
